My husband was at a conference the other day. He listened to a presentation about how children use technology and how it impacts them.

The short version: according to a study (i still have to take the time to research the details), there is a significant amount of children who

  • have zero friends ‘in real life’, everything’s online
  • aren’t actually digital natives but rather ‘generation swipe left swipe right’. Why? Because many don’t know a thing about how things behind the screen work. They just consume.
  • have lost all interest in exploring the world around them. They’re indifferent, from an incredibly young age on.

What the presenters concluded was that we, the adults, have one job: to get these children curious again.

They went as far as saying that enthusiasm is the most valuable tech skill of the future.

According to them, young children now need permanent and immediate acknowledgement. They can’t focus for much longer than a tiktok video.

I am going to do my own research on this. Because luckily the kids I meet don’t seem to fit these characteristics at all.

However, it comes to show got important it is to let children explore their environment with all their senses.
